The Takalani home seed was planted decades ago in the hearts and minds of mothers living in a sprawling township, not intended
to be permanent and therefore offered no facilities for people with disabilities. The name Takalani was chosen through a community competition.
Mrs Mirriam Sibeko, a mother of a disabled child, gathered women in the township & provided training on stimulation and care for people with disabilities.
Mrs Sibeko and Dr Motlana & community members linked up with - Avril Elizabeth Home - Germiston to set up Takalani Home. The purpose of the institution was
to treat, train and accommodate people with mental disabilities. The Anglo-American Chairman's fund sponsored and built the home and its first sod was turned
in August 1989. In November 1990 Takalani Home, a residential unit was opened to cater for 100 profound residents and 60 residents in the adult cottage units.
Takalani Home is a registered Non-Profit Organization NPO Act 71 of 1997. The home provides residential care support, treatment and rehabilitation services to
children, adolescents and adults with mild, moderate and severe intellectual disabilities in a safe, secure, caring and healthy environment.
